There has always been some discussion around the IHMSA BS sessions that our gravitation towards the Super Whiz Bang handgun has scared off the average Joe Six Pack with a 6" .357 Mag. In an effort to see if that was true, the JCSA Pistol Silhouette Club initiated what we call Standard Handgun. Basically, it is a FP-Production entry fired with any regular revolver or semi-automatic that has a barrel length of no more 6.5" and iron sights only. If the handgun has adjustable sights, screwdrivers are not allowed. It's Kentucky windage only. We have been doing this for 4 or 5 years now.

Observation One: We have not obtained one new shooter due to this.

Observation Two: IHMSA shooters like this. They really have friendly competition, more so that with the Super Whiz Bang High Rise or Taco set ups.

Observation Three: You can shoot good scores. Dave Whitman won the 2008 & 2009 Standard Handgun Championship with scores of 29x40 & 28x40 both shot with a standard S&W 686. (We keep track of scores & award a plaque to the high score at year end.)

While we are not bringing in new shooters, we will continue this unofficial side match because our IHMSA shooters enjoy it so much.

Any time you can shoot a 21 with 3" 45's is a good day.

Looking at my records, Larry & Dave Whitman had a Shorty 40 Duel on March 11, 2007. Larry shot a Kimber & Dave a Colt Defender. Larry was the winner with a 20 to Dave's 16. (Larry if it was a 21 please let me know so I can correct my records.) That is a range record with a 3" handgun.

Dave also set a new range record in 2007 in Standard Handgun. He shot a 31 with his S&W 686.

Steve,
We have tried similar tactics here to draw in new shooters with the shorter guns. Our results were similar. Now if we would change the game to "Combat Silhouette" I think we'd get better results. :)

Heck of an idea. Maybe that would entice our Action Pistol Club to give it a try. I'll announce that at our next Board of Director's meeting.

Thanks,

Steve

Stop, Drop, Roll and Shoot? Maybe a Gansta' Match - only holding the pistols sideways? Add motorized treads so the targets move?:triniti:

Or the shooter is moving on a rolling platform to simulate a drive-by...

You may need to put these "official" sights in the rules, so they don't shoot their toes off...or whatever else.:biggrin1:
