    Lightbulb Attention Vietnam Vets

I am sure many of my fellow Vietnam vets are silhouette shooters & members of this forum. I am also sure that you have photos, awards, and other memorabilia laying around gathering dust that may end up in the trash after you are gone.

I recently found out there is a way we can preserve this history. Texas Tech University established the Vietnam Archive and will accept your stuff & preserve it. It you have photos, they will digitize them and send you a CD.

The Archive has been in existence since 6 November, 1989, but I'm sure many vets do not know about it. Feel free to spread the word.

The website is www.vietnam.ttu.edu. Information is there on how to donate. I am in the process of gathering/cataloging my donation now & hope to have it shipped off next week.

Please inform your fellow Vietnam vets of this project as this is an important part of American history that will surely be erased by the liberal historians.

Steve - thanks for pointing this out - and thank you and all the Vietnam Vets for your service. Being a couple years younger I played in the sand in the first Gulf War as a USMC TOW gunner. I have often said that sitting in my Hummer playing Nintendo Game Boy and listening to cassettes in my Sony Walkman gave me a whole new respect for the guys that walked the mountains and jungles of Vietnam. Thanks.

    BK,

There is one big difference between 'Nam & what is going on now in Afghanistan, Pakistan & Iraq. We old guys were in country for 12 months. Any longer was our choice. The kids today get sent back 2, 3, 4 & 5 times. That is almost as bad as the WWI & II GI's that were fighting the whole war. My father-in-law was overseas in WW II & in almost all (if not all) the major European conflicts. What is going on today & what happened back in the world wars, now that's sacrifice!

Thats very true. I was in one of those rare situations where I left the U.S. on December 24th and was back mid May - less than 5 months. The rest of my time was 29 Palms, CA and the resort area of Jacksonville, NC. I also returned to a huge hero's welcome - my T.O.W. unit was in 3 parades and for months I could put on my Dress Blues and get in any exclusive club in Miami with all the free anything on the house. Seems like this was the only conflict since WWII that the U.S. Citizens seemed to in any way appreciate military personnel. What a different country and world it would be today if every U.S. Citizen had to serve for 2 years after high school - like many, many other countries.

    Hey Steve,

Thanks for the info! Being a crew chief and door gunner on a Huey, in Viet Nam, I've got some photos I'd love to have saved.

Val, if you give them permission to digitize all non-copyrighted material & provide you with a DVD they will do that. Thus, you've saved your photos & also have them back at digital images! It's a win/win.
