Thread: New Feature: Google Maps

    Default New Feature: Google Maps

    I have added a new feature - the ability to insert Google Maps. For those not familiar you can go to Google Maps Home Page and look for an address. If you simply Google search a place you often get a small map as the first hit on the top. In any case, once you go to the map you are interested in, select the right zoom level, select Map / Satellite / Hybrid and any other option you like it is now simple to insert this into a Forum posting or Blog entry. Simply copy the entire URL (address in the web browser), then click the MAPS icon in the posting editor (looks like the Earth on the bottom right), and paste the URL in between the two maps blocks. Here is an example of a map for Cherokee Gun Club in Georgia.

    {MAPS}http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&source=hp&oq=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=cherokee+gun+club&fb=1&gl=us&hq=cherokee+gun+c lub&hnear=Gainesville,+GA&cid=0,0,9973676090041794 377&ei=Xe9uS92QHMmXtgfGw7naDQ&sa=X&oi=local_result &ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CAgQnwIwAA{/MAPS}

    (NOTE: In the example above I used { and } instead of [ and ] otherwise it would show the map itself instead of an example of how to use this feature. When you click the Globe icon it will automatically create the correct tags.)

    I suggest you add this to any posting announcing a match or range so that shooters can easily find you!

    Here is a working example.

    Great feature! I wish Google Maps & Mapquest better understood the location of the Josephine County Sportsman Association in relationship to I-5!

    Steve - you can just move the pin around where it actually goes then use that URL

    Actually, the satellite map view is not bad but it doesn't show the relationship of the exit ramp with the range. I'll give it a try.

    Steve. Looks like it puts the marker at about the 300 yard line on the silhouette range. As for exits it is a little confusing because if you are coming from the north you have to go by the range to take the merlin exit and then go back north on the frontage road. From the south you have to take the merlin exit which is 5 miles before the range. Just include writen instructions to take the merlin exit. Hey, I found it with no problems 10 years ago at the first WCC.

    Hey Bret,

    I agree with your assessment of the marker location. I added some driving instructions below the map.
