Thread: Why Did I Miss That Target?

Default Why Did I Miss That Target?

As mentioned in another thread, one of the hidden talents (or not so hidden) is the ability to blame anything and everything on something other than the shooter when a target is missed. I figured it would be a great thread to start. Now, I know no one here has ever done this, so I would not be as bold as to ask that...instead, how about this:

What are some of the funniest reasons you have ever heard for missing a target?

    My favorite are:

    1) The Spotter gave me bad sight adjustments.
    2) That damn T.V. show, "Fill in the Blank" distracted me and the powder charge got screwed up.

    Your turn...

Not so far from reality Steve. I was shooting a HP/FP match and the rain started coming down really hard, almost in sheets and honest to god during that down pour the POI was almost 10 inches low. As soon as the rain stopped everything was back to normal. Might have had more to do with the down draft created by that driving rain but either way that is a big difference. I was shooting my 32-20 at the time with a 120gr cast at around 1100fps.

Other than that, how about the gun slipped off my leg just as I Jerked, I mean squeezed the trigger.
    or
I squeezed just as the guy next to me touched his off and it made me flinch
    or
My sight picture started to fuzz but I hadnt moved so it should be ok
    or
The sun came out and made me shoot over the back
    or

    How about:

    - I couldn't hear myself think over the whine coming from Melvin's position.

    - My powder must be wet.

    - I do much better when I don't get so much "help".

    - Those chickens are just too dang close (Joe).

I swallowd a bug. My spotter fell asleep. I forgot to put powder in the case. I forgot about coreolis effect.

I've been doing this for almost 30 years, and here is what you need to know. A miss is always the fault of my spotter, Robert. Having only one excuse is recommended for us older guys with bad memories. Plus, if you team up with an old spotter, heck, he want remember that you blamed it on him!! Of course, this works both ways. But, I'm usually not even watching when Robert is shooting?? A simple "I didn't see that one" usually suffices

    Default Now you tell me....

I couldn't see the target and the sights at the same time.

Thinking of safety, I kept my eyes on my gun - naturally.

Some bullets hit targets and some hit wood and some hit the grass.

None hit the gun or myself !

Believe it or not I did utter those words on more than one occasion. I think it is a viable excuse. I have blamed misses on my equipment many times in the past but my equipment is finally begining to evolve to the point I will need help finding excuses. I can't blame it on my spotter cause he is one of the best. I don't know....maybe.....and this is one I hear alot and don't know if it is an excuse or not...."well it looked good, I don't know why I missed."
Melvin you could have a clown for a spotter. If Steve had missed that second half size chicken in the shootoffs at the regionals I would have felt bad about what I said when he hit the first one,"1/4 inch left of center Steve" to be honest I don't think he even heard me. You guys shoot so good I have finally figured the only reason you have a spotter is so there is a place to lay blame when you finally do miss

All my miisses are due to the loose nut on the trigger. That is the only excuse I need.

My spotter is my wife who is very good at remembering all the excuses other guy's have used over 25 year's so I just gave up using excuses and accept the fact that it is all the fault of my buddy Jeff Heeler.

That round bound up while feeding in my XP-100R. The bullet must have been "reseated", and caused excessive runout!

If you ever see me on the line watch me when I pick up my ear muffs. I ALWAYS run a finger inside the muffs and give them a quick look, bug in ear+loaded gun= bad juju. I have had a tick crawling on me and decided to deal with him after the string.

I'm sure our western shooters can appreciate this one. At Ft. Stockton a few years ago while on the line shooting, I noticed a scorpion crawling up my shoe.

I did not have one on my shoe when shooting there but did see one at the base of the freestyle shooting platform!
