Thread: Scope for UAS air pistol

Question Scope for UAS air pistol

    Hi, all,

Currently shooting air pistol silhouette using a red-dot scope. I'd like to try an actual scope and judge the difference. This will be strictly for UAS (Creedmoor).

Have been looking at the Bushnell Trophy XLT Pistol Scope, 2-6 x 32mm with a fixed eye relief of 20" which should be just about right however......

They don't list the closest focusing distance of the scope and I doubt without it being an AO lens it could focus down to 10M.

So, my question is would I be disappointed with the clarity of a scope like this being non-AO?

Is there a better scope on the market (price not important) that would offer not only long eye relied but close focusing in 3-4X?

Your help is always appreciated. Thanks!

    Dave,

Here is a Leupold 4x scope for sale on the web for $150 (used). That's a good deal. http://www.gunsamerica.com/977522433...STOL_SCOPE.htm

You can send it back to Leupold & have the parallax knocked down to 15 or 20 yards (I forget what is the shortest they will do.) then adjust the eyepiece for clarity. The parallax adjustment is only $15. You can take a look at my scope if you are coming to the match (Big Bore) this Sunday. This setup really works! I'll throw it in the truck if you like.

    Hey, thanks, Steve!

I just missed that scope by a few minutes as they closed the sale. Found another M8 but it is $219.95 + $10 and looks a little rougher, so I may hold out and keep scanning those used sites.

Won't be able to make BB this Sunday, so I'll have to wait 'till next month to see yours, but I can tell it's the way to go, especially if you're happy with it. Do you remember what the actual eye relief is? Seems like 17-19" is about right for me on the Burris scope on the Anshutz.

Steve, do you think $$230 is too much?

    Dave,

Here's a site that sells them new. http://swfa.com:80/Leupold-4x28-FX-I...ope-P3271.aspx If the used one is a bit beat up I'd consider new. Leupold lists eye relief at 18". I believe it is closer to 20" to 24". Plus, you can't beat their no nonsense warranty.

    Thanks again Steve,

I didn't realize they were still being made, but I think new is the way to go. I e-mailed Leupold concerning the parallex adjustment to get my ducks in a row before purchase. I don't know if I could use standard rings on the Izzy or if I would need one of Ken Lites reverse extension mounts like I have on the Anshutz, but I'm sure you'll know what I need when I get that far.

Thanks again and I'll keep you posted!

    Dave,

You should not need a KL reverse mount. But, you'll need rings high enough to clear the breach when it opens. I'll e-mail Mooney & see what rings he used. He put the same scope on his UAS gun & darned near beat me in the shoot-off. He hit 8 & I had 9.

Hi Guys, The set up I used was a B-Square mount and Leupold "Rifleman" see thru rings. I set the scope with about a quarter of an inch of clearance when you open the loading gate. One thing to watch for on the B-Square mount. Make sure when it clamps on the barrel that it doesn't push against the cylinder housing. That will cause your barrel to bend slightly. If you can get a copy of the IHMSA News for Oct. last year the article has some pictures. Dave if you need some more info or pics I can email them to you. Steve

    Thanks for the info, Steve!

That's just what I needed. I believe that I now have a B-Square mount on the 46M for the red-dot, so all I need is the 'Rifleman' see thru rings.

I'm waiting to hear from Leupold about the parallex conversion and I also want to do to the hand adjustable elevation/windage knobs rather than the standard screwdriver adjust ones. Might as well get it the way I want from the get-go, yes?

    Thanks again to you both!

    Steve,

I just looked at Leupold see thru rings and they come in a ton of sizes.

The higest appear to be : "Detachable See-Thru High Rings - 1.440"

Does sound like what you have?

Yes, those are the ones. I actually take the scope and rings off the mount and shoot Unlimited with the same gun after shooting UAS. I have done some testing and they repeat quite well when remounted.

As for the scope work, last time I had it done it was $15 for the parallax (I think the closest they do is 20yds. but it helps a lot) and the target turrets were $125 each. I still use a screw driver!!

Thanks for all the good info, Steve!

Wow! $125 each! I may also just use a screwdriver! haha

I'm really looking forward to this new setup. The dot is OK, but those turkeys are sure starting to get smaller the older I get.

I'll let you guys know how it's working out. Perhaps there is another new guy that this thread could help.

    Thanks to you both!

Got one on order from Leupold direct. They were able to adjust the newer model FX-II 4 x 28 scope down to 15 yards, so that's right in the middle.

Caved in and ordered the target knobs as the price dropped to $100 for both windage and elevation.

The only bad thing is they are now out 6-8 weeks on these orders, so I'll have a little wait.

Thanks again for all the help, guys. I'm really excited about this!

Just wanted to thank you both for the great recommendation for a scope.

Just got it and it is absolutely wonderful.

Eye relief appears to be in the order of 22-24”, just as you said. It is focused at 10M, something they are able to do with the new design.

Waiting for the pistol to install it on.

I've never seen a scope as bright as this one. It seems brighter than ambient.

    Thanks again for the guidance!
