    Default What do you use

How many of you take your silhouette guns afield for deer or whatever?
What gun do you use and how has it worked for you?

    Charlie,
I haven't been deer hunting in about 10 years but I did manage to take a small buck with my DW 44 mag once upon a time. I didn't make a very good shot (too far back) so it was a tough tracking job but we managed to find him. I was using a handloaded REM 210g SJHP. The bullet fragmented and made a mess of the insides. Needless to say, there was no exit wound.

I have taken my XP 7BR deer hunting but never got a shot at a deer. I found out quickly that my Leupold 4X EER performed pretty poorly in low light situations.

I've taken deer with a variety of my silhouette guns over the years. First one with an old Super Blackhawk 44Mag. Since then I've used a 10" 30 Herrett Contender, DW 44 Mag,
14" 7X30 Contender, XP100 7TCU, and an XP100 in 35 Remington which is now my dedicated hunting handgun. Had success with all of them.

Shot hogs with my 357max contender (3 hogs), 30x39 encore (3hogs) 357/44 Bain & davis (1hog). All clean kills. Next one inline to take a hog will be my MOA in 7br.

Blue, I'm considering using my 7TCU against the hogs here in Middle GA...Am I bringing enough gun? (I'll have my .357Mag on my hip, just in case...)

The 7 TCU will be fine. Just remember bullet choice and bullet placement. You will need a bullet that will expand at TCU speeds. Alot of of hogs been taken with the 357 .

My primary hunting handgun is a XP-100 in 7-08. I have also used my contender in 30 Herrett and I also have a contender in 357 Herrett. For Revolvers I have carried my Ruger SBH 44mag. Although many of my silhouette pistols would also work (7BR, 6.5BR, 41mag, 357max) The ones I use are set up with slings and or holsters for use in the field.

I have taken over 100 tree rats with my T/C .22LR....that count? Distances went all the way from my deck to the back of my yard...maybe 25 yards...

I use my Single 6 and TC, that I use for Smallbore, for Tree Rats. I use my 308 Striker and 7tcu TC, that I use for Bigbore, for Deer. I feel that all of those days at the range practicing and really help prepare me for hunting.

I haven't hunted in a few years, but my first deer was with my Sportsman (XL) in 7 Rocket (7mm Herrett). On that trip, my friend used his SBH in 44 Mag and his wife used her 7 tcu, all of which we used on week ends for silhouette matches. Then all the squirrels that fell to our trusty 22LR TC's.

I've had my 7 Tcu in woods a couple of times but mostly the 7-30 and the 30 Herrett.

This year I used a 308Win xp-100 I built for 500 meter silhouette, I shot a nice 8 point whitetail at 275 yds. A friend used my T/C in 30-30 AI, he also shot a 8 point whitetail at 295 yds. We hunted for 30 minutes in a two man stand before we shot both deer at the same time.

I use a variety of XP's and MOA's for most of my hunting and varminting. On occasion I will use revolver like one of FA's 454's.

Most of this deer season was consumed with a new baby but I have a 260 Encore which I suppose would be my unlimited gun if I ever get to shoot that. I shot my first deer this year with a bolt gun but have taken that pistol with me every hunt since but haven't had a shot at a good buck yet. Before next season I'd like to get a 14" 7TCU barrel for my Contender that could double as a hunting/IHMSA gun.

Other than that I recently picked up a High Standard Sport King with a Trophy barrel that I'm hoping to use for squirrels this year.

I used the same 7-30 Waters that I shot US with last year to hunt with as well.

I shot a nice little 6-point with my UAS TC 7TCU two years ago.

I built myself a 7mm Mauser Encore pistol for hunting that I might use for UAS sometime, but maybe not.

I will most definately use the Ruger Charger that I am building right now for some tree rat blasting next fall.

When I started IHMSA, i made some deer loads for my UAS Super 14 30-30 using 125gr. Ballistic Tips. They were absolutely explosive... I am now using 140 gr. Ballistic tips out of my 10" 7TCU standing/production gun. With all of the practice we get with our competition guns, it makes sense to hunt with them.

First deer I shot with a handgun was my SW29 10" 44 mag. That was the gun that got me started in this mess in the first place. I thought it was a good shooter until i shot and saw what an FA can do.
I then moved on to the TC's. First one was a 7TCU, scored a nice sized cull buck with that one. Then got into a 7-30, several deer dropped to that one. Then when the encore came out, I had to have one in 308. I had it about three years before I hunted with it. Scored one of the biggest bucks I have ever shot with it. Off hand at 125ish yards in the middle of a bean field with no cover or anything to lean on.
I then got in to the cast bullet mode and want to give the 375WW and 45-70 a go.
