Thread: Bomar Replacements

    Default Bomar Replacements

Has anyone tried the new Champion sight that's supposed to replace the Bomar? How well is it constructed and how well does it track? I had heard rumors that some others were in the works as well by other manufaturers. Any word?

OK...I am going to try to get through this without letting my absolute hatred of Robert and his company show through...

The Champion sights are NOT made by champion, despite Robert Salva's claim that they are. Several brand new, never mounted Bo-Mar sights (that were destroyed, not paid for, not replaced and I will never see again despite numerous promises that they would be returned in pristine condition) were borrowed by Robert - then sent off to Da King in Georgia (I do not recall his company name but I was told that Champion would be doing this in house in about a dozen emails). Mr. King actually did the reverse engineering and is manufacturing them for Champion last I was involved. Mr. Salva claims to manufacture all of his sights - but based on numerous contradictory emails from him I am not sure what he does and does not make himself. Everything from "it's all outsourced" to "he is the actual manufacturer of all the new Sig sights." Believe what you will. I was sent a half dozen of these when they first went into production - and they were horrible. I showed a couple other shooters who agreed. I ended up throwing them out. You needed a 1/2" socket to turn the adjustment screw, zero repeatability...all around garbage. At this point in time my attorney has actually sent bark letters to Champion demanding reimbursement for my sights, so I have, obviously, not tested anything he has recently done. I will duct tape cardboard cutouts on my pistols before ever using one of his sights again! But hey, that's just my experience.

Hey Doug, don't hold back, tell us what you really think............... Sorry to open a festering wound. I had no idea.

Seriously, I had heard that there we 3 different companies trying to develop a new Bomar replacement, Champion being one. What about the others? Anybody?

Well, there are two IHMSA shooters that know far more about the current status then I do...they are Left Coast guys and neither is on the new website yet... I know that in conversations with Champion and Da King both of their companies were planning to release these - that was when Robert denied knowing Mr. King and I was having conversations with both companies since neither had fully committed yet. They were actually both selling the sights made in Georgia by Mr. King. At one point in time I heard that both of the IHMSA guys mentioned above were also going to go down this path, but it turns out I think that one or both of them just make "add-on's" like a mount for the F/A revolvers. Now, to clarify things, I have ABSOLUTELY nothing against Mr. King - he was always polite and never lied to me in any way and I would be happy to fully support his venture if in fact he is still working on this. I have not followed up with him since my experience simply because I do not know his relationship with Mr. Salva and do not want to risk assisting Champion in any way. Just my vengeful, vindictive Marine Corp side showing through...

Champion sights are manufactured by Champion Gun Sights in Georgia. Da Keng is the President of the company. I don't know what Salva is saying, but he has no ownership interest in Champion Gun Sights that I know of. My neighbor & I provided Da with significant input in the design of this sight. Those that I know of in use are just as reliable as the old Bo-Mar. The sights are that are being made are (1) XP replacements, (2) flat based and (3) Contender. Champion is also supplying Freedom Arms with their rear sights. I believe those are available from FA for $125 plus freight.

I have no knowledge of any other company making Bo-Mar replacements at this time.

    Champion's web site is http://www.championgunsights.com/

I hope this helps to clear things up.

I'm looking for a bomar sight for my Contender. I couldn't find anything like that on Champion's site.

Champion has a long standing history of paying less than zero attention to their web site. Anyone that has had any success dealing with them has done so over the telephone.

I have a recently purchased Ken Light full length rib for a T/C and I believe it uses a rear leaf made by Champion. In my opinion it is equivalent to the BoMar.

Doug is correct. Give them a call. I would also agree with his assessment of their quality. We have shooters using them here in OR & they are very satisfied.

When a scope is used with those full length ribs do you guys use scopes with quick release bases or something so the scope can be added or removed at will? What kind of bases do you use for that?

The full length rib from Ken Light is based on a Weaver set up. Any Weaver style rings will mount to the rail. Check out the Ken Light website to see some of the setups. http://www.kenlightmfg.com/
