Thread: IMR 8208 not for pistols?

Default IMR 8208 not for pistols?

I already had an 8lb jug of 8208 on the way, when I happened to read Hogdgon's 2010 loading manual that has three articles about the new powder. I am anxious to try it in my 7BR and .223 XPs, but the loading manual doesnt give loads for either in the pistol section. It does, however give loads in the rifle section. Why would they do that? I could see if the powder was thought to be too slow for a short barrel, but it is faster than 4895, and they give loads for that. Any ideas? Thanks-

Elvis. The powder is relitively new. It is primarily developed for Benchrest competition which happens to currently be dominated by rifles. Use the rifle data in your pistol and clock your loads for velocity. Your XP will never know it is shooting rifle loads. The rifle loads from my Sierra manual just happen to be what I shoot in my 6BR XP and my newest 223 XP will get the same treatment.....a steady diet of rifle loads

I too am curious about this powder. Read a little about it and it looks promising. I have shot loads out of my hunting XP (7-08) and when I loaded from the Hogdgon manual for pistol data (H4895 I think) the results were disappointing in velocity by some 200 fps. I went to the rifle data which was several grains more and obviously safe in a XP and got the velocities I was looking for and what was listed in the pistol data so I wouldnt be too concerned about it only being listed in the rifle section. When new powders are brought out they dont seem to test it in every possible gun/barrel length. Since it is marketed as a benchrest type powder the rifle data will logicly come out first in my opinion.

This powder is doing great so far! Presently I'm using it in my 14" 30-30 Contender (22.0 grns of it) behind a cast Lyman 311041. It shot very accurately, but was kind of underpowered, I'm going to up the charge a half grain at a time. I'm also using it in my 223 and 7BR XP-100s. I'll post good load recipes when I settle on my favorite loads.

It works very well in my 6BR chambered XP. I use 24.5gr behind a 95gr Nosler BT 2250fps and a SD of 8. I used it at the Internationals and shot a 76 in UASHS and an 80 in BB UAS. I used it in my 7BR Wichita under a 139 Hornady SST, but as I kept upping the powder the SD kept going down. I stopped at 29 gr and went back to Benchmark as the load was hotter than I wanted. It was far from a top load, it was just faster than I wanted or needed to drive the bullet. Why have more recoil than needed? It was no more accurate than the Benchmark load in that cartridge. For the 6BR it is great. I think it needs pressure to perform best. I now intend to try it in my 6mm TCU with 100gr bullets.
