Thread: 12" T/C bbl

    Default 12" T/C bbl

Does anyone know the answer as to why the 12" T/C barrel has not be approved for production. If some wanted to start shooting shillouttes and only had a G2 with a 12"bbl,I believe he would have to shoot unlimited class right? All my bbls are 10" except for my 30-30 which is 14".I'm thinking that having to shoot in unlimited right of the bat may be a bit intimitating to some and preventing them from particapating.

IHMSA believes the 12" barrel places the gun too close to Unlimited to be considered Production. I don't understand why anyone would be intimidated by shooting in Unlimited. They will hit the same number of targets they would if they were shooting that same gun in Production. It's just a category. Shoot and have fun. I think far too many people expect to shoot International scores right off the bat. The most fun I had when I first started was working my way up through the classes.

Intimidation should in this case be viewed as a challenge. Without the challenge where would one derive a sense of accomplishment? If 40x40's were easy it wouldn't be fun. SHOOT WHAT YOU HAVE WHERE YOU CAN.

Part of that answer also lies in the history of the T/C. As I understand it, when the Production v. Unlimited rules were set forth, T/C made a 10" and a 14" barrel. It wasn't until much later that T/C went to the 12" barrel. The difference in sight radius between 10" and 14" (or up to 15") is the greatest difference. In any of the Any Sight categories, the barrel length difference is negligible anyhow. As as mentioned, when T/C did go to 12", IHMSA felt that there needed to be more than a 2" difference separating Production from Unlimited.

Hey, I started shooting this sport way back when in unlimited. 14" 7TCU. I say run what ya brung when you are starting out. If it is an unlimited gun so be it. If you dont want to shoot unlimited but only have a 12" barrel then come to my matches and I will give you a gun and ammo to shoot if you want to try it out. Personally I think the unlimited guns are easier to shoot due to the longer sight radius so dont be intimidated by the unlimited catagory because there is Int, AAA, AA, A, B & C classifications. Remember you are only shooting against shooters within your classification. My 2 cents.

Bret makes a good point. Off the line, as in places like Internet discussion forums, people want to get into heated rules arguments. On the line though it is really a non-issue as most people are more competing against themselves and helping everyone else. Do not get hung up on which category a gun falls into - just go out and have fun with it.

What most forget is if you shoot in unlimited, and are a novice level - you are classified in a low group, not up with the top international shooters
in the same group. In other words, you will be shooting with those just like and skilled as yourself. The 40x40 or 80x80 been there done that
shooters are in other classes and while they are fantastic in their ability and you never shot - they are more likely to talk and help to you
than your shaking bones to them. Don't sweat the small stuff - the rule writers are sticks in the mud and don't change because NRA or anyone else
changes. There is a large number of rules pointed towards T/C by name and not the other guns. Someone had or has it out for T/C from my stance.
    To recap, shoot - if you score 38 - you will be upgraded in that unlimited section. C level is 0-10, B -17, A - 23 AA - 24-32, AAA 33-37, INT 38-40 (out of 40)!
So you start at level C and work up. Those AA and AAA shooters shoot against each other. Only C's shoot against other C's. Martin

I have a very accurate 357 Maximum barrel (originally 357 magnum, rechambered by Bellm), but the 12" length is a little to short for me, as I shoot a modified Dead Frog position. Last Sunday, I left the match with powder burns on my right pantleg, about calf level. That's getting a little too close for me, I gotta get a 14", or learn to shoot Creedmore better!!
